New Surfacing Coming to SERA Campus Accessible Playground ADA-accessible playground at South Tacoma’s SERA sports campus and STAR Center to close for new, eco-friendly resurfacing.
Tacoma, WA: At the ADA-accessible SERA campus playground in South Tacoma, kids can wheel up to a specialized swing, play on a wheelchair-accessible teeter-totter and explore sensory toys. But after this month, they’ll also be able to do it on a new, eco-friendly play
surface. Located just outside STAR Center and bordering the SERA sports complex, the popular playground is getting brand-new surfacing that is eco-friendly and durable. The playground will be closed to the public during the work, which is estimated to take two
months and begins this week. The poured-in-place rubber surface which currently protects children from falls will be removed and replaced with a new synthetic, fall-cushioning play turf. The turf, called Forever Lawn, was designed specifically for safety and sustainability, and is made from 100% recycled plastic. It is weather-resistant, with antimicrobial technology, and is both durable and eco-friendly. It does not contain the rubber pellets associated with some athletic turf. Most importantly, it is wheelchair-friendly, to allow everyone to play easily.
Other Metro Parks playgrounds featuring the new surface include those at Wright and McCarver Parks, which were upgraded early this year.
“Our playgrounds are immensely popular and get a lot ofuse,” said Hollie Rogge, deputy director of neighborhood
and community parks. “The new surface will protect kids asthey play while helping Metro Parks be sustainable and good stewards of our communityresources.”
The resurfacing is supported by funds from the Tacoma voter-approved 2014 bond. Other inclusive features of the playground include picnic tables with space for wheelchairs, climbing structures with ramps, specialized swings and plenty of ADA-accessible restrooms.
