7 Reasons to Send Your Kid to Summer Camp

By YMCA of Pierce & Kitsap Counties April 28, 2022

For many kids, summer is considered to be a magical time. Summer means potential, energy, and time for unstructured play. Sending your kid to camp means you’ll be magnifying the magic of summer.

Not sure if a summer camp is right for your kid? Here are 7 of the best reasons to give your kid one of the best summers ever.

  • Trying New Things: Exploring your backyard, neighborhood or city is fun and essential to orient your child in the world, but there are skills, games, and activities at camp that you just can’t do at home! Swimming, group sports, and activities with new friends give kids a chance to learn about safety, sportsmanship, team building, and gain confidence.
  • Meeting New People: At camp, your kids get to meet campers from all over the region. Navigating new relationships is exciting and teaches us so much. Camp is a special environment where kids stretch and grow more into themselves. Experiencing new things with new people the same age fosters camaraderie and leads to meaningful friendships.
  • Challenging Themselves: Not everything at camp will be easy! By enduring setbacks and pushing themselves within a nourishing environment, kids build resilience and experience the reward of achieving something they may originally think of as impossible.
  • Appreciating Nature: Pacific Northwest parents know all too well the healing power of nature. It can be great to take a break from what’s familiar, your family, friends, and neighborhood to get back in touch with yourself and enjoy the natural splendor.
  • Learning New Skills: Being at camp, kids are able to learn how to do new activities and sports. including music, arts, or soccer. They’ll also be learning how to live and play with a group of new people. Everyone at camp helps teach one another skills like respect, listening, independence, cooperation, and tolerance.
  • Being Active: Getting out and exploring with all the games and excursions at camp is a great way to have fun while exercising. It’s a fantastic and healthier alternative to hanging out at home all summer.
  • Having Fun: The most important part of going to camp is having fun!
