About:

Since its founding in 1955, the Tacoma Swim Club (TSC) has remained a nationally recognized, year-round aquatic program offering professional coaching to members of all ages and abilities. TSC currently serves over 70 athletes, primarily ages 6-17 and their families in the Tacoma and Gig Harbor areas. Each year, our swimmers compete in approximately 20 local, regional, and international events appropriate for their age and ability. Athletes in four different primary training groups spend between 3 and 20 hours per week in pools at Wilson, Gig Harbor, Peninsula, Lincoln High Schools, University of Puget Sound.

TSC swimmers achieve at the highest levels. Six swimmers who trained with TSC have competed in the 1968, 1972, 1976, 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic games. TSC has sent at least one and sometimes up to 10 swimmers to every US Olympic Trials since 1964.  In the 2012 London Olympics, TSC alumni Nathan Adrian won an individual Gold medal in the 100 Freestyle.

Founding Coach Dick Hannula is one of the most successful coaches in Washington state history at any level of any sport. Hannula's swimming teams at Wilson High School won 323 consecutive meets, including 24 consecutive state championships. Hannula's extensive accomplishments include induction into the Hall of Fame of eight organizations, including every relevant state, national and international body. The Tacoma Athletic Commission annually presents The Hannula Award to Pierce County's amateur athlete of the year. Hannula's career as a swim coach is legendary, and his efforts over the years epitomize the best qualities of amateur sports. Among many other publications, Hannula co-authored The Swim Coaching Bible. The dedication, discipline and achievements of TSC swimmers are regularly rewarded by scholarship offers to swim at some our country's top colleges.

With the exception of our small but experienced coaching staff, TSC is run entirely by dedicated volunteers. TSC is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, governed by its families through board members.
